The former Schatzalp Sanatorium has been run as a mountain hotel since 1953, the charm of the house has been preserved for us and our guests through careful restoration and loving care.

The Berghotel Schatzalp is situated 1865 metres above sea level above Davos, nestled in a private forest park with a botanical garden. The 92 beautifully furnished rooms as well as two houses and a holiday flat invite you to relax and unwind. The Schatzalp is car-free and guests can reach us from the centre of Davos after a 4-minute ride on the mountain railway, daily from morning until late at night.
The large south-facing balconies allow our guests up to 2.5 hours more sunshine than in the valley. The Snowbeach terrace restaurant at lunchtime and the Belle Epoque restaurant will enchant you with the charm of times gone by.
The wonderfully preserved lobby from the year 1900 shines today with the flair in which it was built. Various rooms allow us to cater to the individual wishes of our guests and to plan everything from the most beautiful day of your life to all kinds of corporate events, seminars, conferences or birthdays.

Host

Paulo Bernardo, a qualified hotelier, has managed the Schatzalp since 2012. He is continuously restoring the hotel with passion and foresight and characterises it with a clear structure. His hospitality is what makes the hotel so dynamic.

History

In 1900, at Willem Jan Holsboer's initiative, the Schatzalp sanatorium was built on a high plateau above Davos to provide rest cures for tuberculosis patients. Built by Zurich architects Pfleghardt and Häfeli, the building served as a sanatorium for almost fifty years. At the time, it was thought that a sunny location and good alpine air and cleanliness were the keys to curing tuberculosis.

The building thus faced south, and all of the rooms on that side had large, sunny balconies for the patients. A high degree of sanitary comfort - the hotel had its own water supply - ensured the necessary hygiene. Floor heating, an elevator and a flat roof from which the melt water was drained into the building were a few of the newest technologies in what was at the time a luxury sanatorium. It was one of the first reinforced concrete structures in Switzerland. Architecturally, the building stands at the crossroads between Historicism and Modernism. The complex, with projecting sections in the middle and on the sides, shows the use of form and function. With their designs for the façade and the interior rooms, the architects tried to integrate the building into its surroundings by using regional motifs. The sun porches show patterns of the 'Swiss style', while the façades are covered with sgraffiti and colors associated with the Engadine. In almost willful contrast, there are Art Nouveau decorative elements throughout the house. At the end of the 1940s, when the first effective drugs against the tuberculosis bacteria came on the market, the sanatoriums for patients with pulmonary disease became superfluous. The sanatorium on Schatzalp was turned into a hotel in 1954. Large parts of the historic building were left untouched. Many historic rooms and bathrooms and the original elevator are still preserved today. The Schatzalp Hotel has been a member of Swiss Historic Hotels since 2007. In 2008, it was named Historic Hotel of the Year by Icomos.

Rooms & Gastronomy

Rooms

The marvellous stories of our rooms over the last 125 years would certainly make a wonderful essay. Be it the romance between Dmitri Romanov and Coco Chanel or the rooms that Kaiser Wilhelm II reserved for himself and his family on all three floors for over a decade and fortunately never had to use. History and comfort are not mutually exclusive, which is why we also offer our chalet in addition to our renovated Villa Guarda, the former medical centre.

Gastronomy

The diversity of our culinary offering begins in the minds of our team and in our own herb garden. High-quality products are the basis of every dish in our house and the care that these are perfectly prepared and served.

Region

Region

The municipality of Davos covers almost the entire Landwasser Valley in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and is located in the Prättigau region at an altitude of 1560 metres. This makes Davos the highest town in Europe with 10800 inhabitants.
