The gently renovated Hotel Chasa Chalavaina in Müstair reopened on June 1, 2022. Guests will find the inn, which was first mentioned as a hostel in 1254, a gem with eighteen rooms, a restaurant and a large garden.

The Hotel Chasa Chalavaina offers eighteen individually arranged and designed guest rooms; they are spread over the two adjoining houses. So there is something original to marvel at in every room. The monastery workers, who strive for perfection, have planed, sanded and sawn to ensure that everything fits well. The linen and half-linen table linen and aprons for the staff were made in the Tessanda hand weaving manufactory in nearby Santa Maria. The spacious garden behind the house is enchanting, a welcome retreat for city dwellers and those seeking peace and quiet with its summer flowers and tranquillity. The Swiss stone pine dining room shines in its old splendor; it has only been renovated where really necessary. In any case, every touch, every renovation throughout the hotel was carried out in close consultation with experts. The tables and chairs in the restaurant are the same as before, the sooty kitchen is also unchanged and offers space for eight guests.

Host

For host Ulrich Veith, it is a stroke of luck that he is able to implement this project in exactly this way. He left a lasting impression on two guests with the sentence "I may run it". He is supported by a dedicated team of 8 employees.

History

The almost 770-year-old hotel on the connecting axis beetween the Grisons and South Tyrol has written history and stories. Probably the most famous episode is that of 1499, when the Grisons war commander Benedikt Fontana is said to have given orders to the 6,000 young soldiers standing on the Plaz Grond in the arbor of the Chasa Chalavaina to fight against the Austro-Habsburg troops.

The next day, the Grisons faced an army twice as large at the Calven valley. They were able to defeat them. This led to the Calven House, later known as Chasa Chalavaina. Jon Baptista Fasser ran the Chasa Chalavaina for around 50 years, until the end of 2021. His stories and the collection of all kinds of objects that adorned the house are legendary. Now over 80 years old, the host was actively looking for a successor. Since the beginning of 2022, the Hotel Chalavaina has had a solid future ahead of it thanks to the newly established Chasa Chalavaina Foundation and the operating company Hotel Chasa Chalavaina AG. Those responsible for the neighboring UNESCO World Heritage Site Kloster St. Johann were committed to preserving the ensemble of monastery and hotel around the Plaz Grond in Müstair. The Chasa Chalavaina Foundation acquired the hotel. The purpose of the foundation is to preserve the original character of the house with its eighteen guest rooms, the restaurant, the legendary kitchen stained black by soot and the large garden.

Rooms

The Hotel Chasa Chalavaina offers eighteen individually arranged and designed guest rooms; they are spread across the two adjoining houses. There is something original to marvel at in every room; a roof battlement where you can relax wonderfully, a pair of historic wooden beds that have been given new bedding, as have all the bedrooms in the house. A painted rustic cupboard here, the large pergola facing Plaz Grond there.

Gastronomy

The kitchen, where the South Tyrolean Oliver Thialer works, has been newly equipped. Cooking what's there. All year round, nature offers its cornucopia of fruit and vegetables. Oliver processes the organic farmer's veal from nose to tail. Herbs and grasses are a must in his kitchen. He also loves to prepare bread, Schlutzkrapfen, pasta and pastries with apricots and apples from the scratch. Dinner from 6 p.m.; table reservations info@hotelchalavaina.ch or +41 (0)81 858 54 68
