Histoire Romantik Hotel Wilden Mann

Histoire depuis 1860

The name Wilden Mann first appears in a 1517 document, when the inn received a ‘Pintenrecht’, the right to serve drinks. The structural origins of today’s hotel can also be dated to this time. The two houses which can be discerned on Martin Martini’s 1597 city map at today’s location were rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1726, the Wilden Mann was given full tavern rights, and annexes with stables and a laundry were added on the ground floor. In the second half of the 19th century, the sharp rise in visitors to Lucerne encouraged extensive hotel construction. The Wilden Mann, which was officially listed as a hotel in 1860, also benefitted. The hotel gradually expanded to surrounding properties. To begin with, the laundry on Münzgasse was converted into a new three-story building in 1861. Additional renovations and additions and the terrace on the west side on Burgerstrasse followed in the same decade. In 1897, the Wilden Mann expanded again with the addition of the houses at Burgerstrasse 7 and 9; in 1908, further renovations and an addition were completed at Bahnhofstrasse 28. Today the hotel occupies seven houses. The overall complex reflects the history of tourism in Lucerne in an exemplary way. Faithfully restored façades from the second half of the 19th century determine the richly varied appearance of today’s hotel complex. The highly articulated façades on Bahnhofstrasse are particularly valuable. Among the interiors, the Burgerstube, which was redone in the Gothic Revival style in 1908, deserves special mention. Its colorful flat carvings, the walls and the ceiling beams with their painted coats of arms, the windows with lead-cased bull’s eyes and stained glass and the chandeliers and furnishings from the same period combine to form a valuable Belle Époque work of art. The hotel has been a member of Swiss Historic Hotels since 2008. (RF)
