The former private villa, built in 1927, is an insider tip for individualists looking for an extraordinary hotel experience. The hotel is only 2.5 kilometres from the village centre of St. Moritz and enchants with its exceptionally beautiful location. Surrounded by flower meadows and old trees, with a view of the Engadin lakes and mountains, it is the ideal place to relax.

Much of the furniture in the hotel dates back to when it was first built, meaning that none of the 19 rooms are alike. Run by Pro Juventute, this family hotel also offers a library where guests can relax, a lounge with a grand piano and fireplace, a dining room for breakfast and dinner, a sauna and a spacious garden with a playground. With the guest card and the mountain railway included in the summer offer (for stays of two nights or more) or the discounted ‘Sleep + Ski’ hotel ski pass, the surrounding peaks are on every guest's bucket list.

Host

Since 2024, Silvia Roth has been running our establishment with great passion and dedication, together with nine friendly co-hosts. As a passionate globetrotter, Silvia has encountered countless cultures – experiences that she brings to her daily hospitality. And as an enthusiastic skier, she knows the magic of the mountains as well as the needs of those seeking relaxation, inspiration or simply a break.

History

The house was built by Baron Heinrich von Riedemann, a successful and wealthy shipowner from Hamburg. He was regular guest at Suvretta House for several years and also contributed financially to the construction of the Regina Pacis chapel, which was donated by the Bon, von Riedemann and Todd families. In order to build his own holiday home in the Engadin, which he had grown to love, the baron purchased the plot of land on the hillside with unobstructed views of the mountains and lake landscape.

The villa was completed in 1927 and became the holiday home of a family of four, who also regularly hosted friends from the aristocracy. The Florentine-style interior with its magnificent furniture was the work of Mrs von Riedemann: Baron Heinrich von Riedemann had married Francesca Ricci, a native Italian from Florence. It soon became apparent that the couple's daughter, Béatrice von Riedemann, felt particularly at home at Chesa Spuondas. She was also educated here and celebrated lavish parties during her youth. When she married her tutor, the impoverished Count von Ledebur-Wicheln, in the Regina Pacis chapel at the age of 20, her father gave his daughter the house as a wedding gift, probably as a sign of his affection.

From then on, the von Ledebur family lived permanently in the Engadin with their three growing children and up to 15 employees. According to accounts, the layout was such that the parents each had a separate spacious room on the first floor and the children slept with their nannies on the second floor. They were taught by a private tutor in a specially furnished corner by the window. The house remained the von Ledebur family home from 1930 to 1963. However, even during these years, it was becoming apparent that Béatrice von Ledebur was in poor health.

In memory of her equally charitable father, the lady of the house donated her beloved home to the Pro Juventute foundation. Her wish was to fill Chesa Spuondas with life, families and lots of children.

Nothing has changed since then. The house on the hillside is still a gift. And there are still many gifts to be found there: a smile here, a kind word there, a friendly gesture, a moment of silence, a little time and sometimes even a room...

In addition to the approximately 95 per cent of individual guests who visit the house, the Pro Juventute holiday fund enables several families and single mothers on a low income to enjoy a free week's holiday during the school holidays every year.

Rooms & Gastronomy

Rooms

Each of the 19 hotel rooms is unique. This fits in well with the diversity of our guests. The rooms are deliberately not equipped with televisions or telephones, so that everyday life in the tranquil mountain world recedes into the distance. Whether simple and comfortable, dreamy and romantic or spacious and elegant – there is a ‘favourite room’ for every taste.

Gastronomy

We attach great importance to healthy, wholesome meals prepared with love. Wherever possible, we use products from the Alpine region – and also enjoy cooking traditional Engadin recipes. Our extensive breakfast buffet is perfectly tailored to the energy requirements at over 1,800 metres above sea level. In the evening, our guests can enjoy a daily changing 3-course menu, with a vegetarian alternative available, or the colourful selection from our à la carte menu.
