History

The Hirschen, a five-storey half-timbered building complete with a bay window, forms an ensemble together with its adjoining buildings, House Graf, the wine press, the two barns, and House Wyttenbach. This stately home is the visible and consciously designed expression of the family policy of the Wehrli dynasty of the city of Zurich which held important official positions for 220 years: from the end of the 16th till the beginning of the 19th centuries, family members represented the dominion of the monastery of St. Gall as senior and junior reeves, bailiffs, and country clerks in the Seebach and Stammer Valleys.

Rooms

Enjoy a good night’s sleep in one of our 12 rooms in three different buildings. We offer both simple rooms as well as historically valuable rooms with WC and shower on the same floor, plus six modern, furnished rooms in House Wyttenbach with ensuite bathroom. The former farmhouse with its garden was restored and added to. Two of its rooms can be combined to form a small flat with kitchen and drawing room.

Gastronomy

We cultivate a fresh and regional country cuisine. Whenever possible, seasonal products are purchased regionally and used so as to preserve the produce’s original, natural flavour. The highlight in spring are the famous green asparagus from Stamen, which are on the menu in the most diverse variations while, in autumn, wild boar and deer shot by the village hunters are served. Our wine list features a lot of regional wines. This selection is complemented by wines from Austria, Italy, and Spain.

Stammheim is the starting point for the entire wine country. On foot to the Nussbaumersee, by bike to Stein am Rhein, on horseback through the idyllic landscape. We have the right excursion idea for every need and are happy to advise you in planning your excursion.

Arrival

Oberstammheim is situated between Stein am Rhein and Andelfingen and easily reached by public transport. The Hirschen Inn is located at the eastern end of the village.
Oberstammheim is easily reached by S-Bahn (commuter train) via Winterthur (S29 leaves every half hour from Winterthur or Frauenfeld). There also is an hourly bus connection to Diessenhofen and Frauenfeld. Arrival by car: From Zurich: approx. 50 minutes (depending on day of week and time of day) / from Stein am Rhein/Diessenhofen/Kartause Ittingen Warth: approx. 10 minutes / from Frauenfeld: approx. 20 minutes / from Schaffhausen/Rhine Falls: approx. 20 minutes
