The Grand Hotel & Kurhaus is located at an altitude of 2070 metres in the heart of a beautiful Swiss stone pine forest. Built in 1896, its atmosphere is typical of mountain hotels.

For more than 120 years, it was run by the founding family, with four generations succeeding each other before giving way to new lovers of the place, Edi & Cédriane, who are proud to continue to write the history and honour the passion for hospitality of their predecessors. Set in an exceptional mountain setting, the Grand Hotel & Kurhaus and its vast garden offer a privileged environment for relaxation and discovery. Most of the rooms have a magnificent view of the surrounding peaks, while the historic rooms and lounges have survived the ages by retaining their historical character. A real journey back in time for stays far from the crowds and close to nature.

History

The Kurhaus in Arolla, the popular mountain climbers' village at the back of the Val d'Hérens at 2100 meters, was one of the last larger hotels built in the valley. The same family had opened the Hôtel de la Dent-Blanche lower down in Evolène in 1858 as the valley's first inn and had made a success of it.

They built the new Kurhaus in Arolla as a massive, three-story stone building with a saddleback roof and numerous wooden balconies in the middle of what was, at the time, an extensive larch forest. The first visitor to sign in on August 6, 1896, was the local vicar: H. Percy Grubb, Pasteur à Evolène - The Lord be with thee". Arolla's new hotel rapidly held its own against the long-established Hôtel du Mont Collon. In 1913, the enterprising owner even built his own power station to deliver the desired electricity to the hotel. Thanks to the steady patronage of mountain climbers, the hotel managed to survive the crises and war years of the 20th century undamaged. In 1930, there was even a modest addition, two window axes wide, on the north side. In the 1960s two stories were added and central heating was installed. The hotel was thus ready for its first winter season in 1968, as Arolla had become a winter sports resort with several ski lifts. The Kurhaus with its large park, surrounded today by an airy pine forest, still radiates the coziness and simplicity of a true mountain hotel. It is managed by the fourth generation of the founding family and has been a member of Swiss Historic Hotels since 2006.
