With its 17 rooms, the Hotel Restaurant Baseltor is located in the heart of Solothurn's historic old town. Great importance is attached to freshness, craftsmanship and sustainability - which is reflected in the cuisine, the cellar and also in the individual rooms.

Soft, muted colours, design classics, oak or fir wood flooring and modern, simple bathrooms characterise the spacious, quiet rooms. The furnishings harmonise perfectly with the 17th century old town building, which has been used as a restaurant and hotel since 1874. Each of the rooms is individual in its layout, colour scheme and furnishings, yet unmistakably Baseltor. The timeless creations of the kitchen are prepared with great attention to craftsmanship and served in the restaurant, spread over 2 floors, terraces and patios.

Managing Director Martin Unternährer, Head Chef Pia Camponovo and their team will work together to make the visit, whether as a hotel guest or diner in our restaurant, as special and enjoyable as possible.

History

The hotel at Hauptgasse 79 in Solothurn’s old town, directly opposite famous St. Ursen Cathedral, was first mentioned in a 17th century document. The traditional town house with its front and back buildings was owned by various well-known Solothurn patrician families for centuries.

Well-known families from Solothurn's upper class, such as Sury, Wagner and von Roll, succeeded each other as owners of the house over the course of two centuries. The building has always been classically divided into a front and a rear house, separated by an inner courtyard, where a private fountain stood from 1676. Close to the rear building, probably on the site of today's house at Riedholzplatz 8, there was a barn that belonged to the estate. In 1813, the property, which is located on the long side of the baroque St. Ursen Cathedral, was acquired by St. Ursen Abbey and served as a residence for the canons until the abolition of the abbey in 1874. The purchase of the house by the wine merchant Johan Zeltner in the same year and the opening of the ‘Wirtschaft zum Baseltor’ laid the foundations for the inn. In 1991, the Baseltor co-operative, which until then had been running the Löwen restaurant in Solothurn, moved into the building, thus opening a new chapter. With the architect Gérard Staub, the co-operative extensively renovated the building with great respect for the historical substance and opened the first hotel rooms. Over the years, the range of rooms has been steadily expanded and extended to neighbouring buildings, so that today 17 rooms in four different buildings are on offer. The co-operative not only grew in the ‘mother house’ but was also able to take over other businesses in Solothurn. These include the Restaurant Bar Solheure, the fine dining Restaurant Salzhaus, the Hotel Restaurant La Couronne and the Café Bar Viktor. All businesses are individually managed and contribute to a lively city.

Rooms & Gastronomy

Rooms

The individually furnished hotel rooms are all unique, as the floor plans of the 4 old town houses they are housed in give them their shape. The winding corridors and many original materials exude Mediterranean charm and a sense of well-being. The colour scheme and design classics harmoniously round off the overall picture of the unique rooms.

Gastronomy

The restaurant is steeped in the cooperative tradition, and despite being straightforward and unpretentious, its cuisine has been awarded 12 GaultMillau points. Head Chef Pia Camponovo and her team take a range of local produce and turn it into Mediterranean slow food with an oriental twist.
