Post Hotel Löwe

The Post Hotel Löwe is a total work of art. The Löwe is a theatre, hotel, museum and dining temple all in one.
The newly renovated Hotel Löwe has seven rooms and suites that have been completely refurbished. World-renowned designer Martin Leuthold drew inspiration from the Mulegns guest books and dedicated each room to a European metropolis – paying homage to the well-travelled guests of centuries past. A place where history blends organically with the design of tomorrow.

The illustrious dining rooms. Breakfast is served on silverware, as in days gone by, in the delicate Sala Rosa. During the day, the wooden Ustareia invites you to linger, while the veranda and the old hotel garden, which looks up to the White Tower, offer fresh air. In the evening, candlelight awaits relaxed guests in the Blue Room, the Steiva blava. The salon, with its freshly upholstered antique sofas, lulls you into sweet dreams.

The light blue hotel theatre. The hotel is a theatre. On the first floor, in the magnificent rooms of the old house, the ghosts of the past cavort as stage characters: crown princes from days gone by, sensitive Nobel Prize winners, embittered confectioners and angry stable boys tell their stories and put time out of action. Concerts fill the house with sound, and Romanic folk songs tell of the eternal homesickness of the people of Graubünden.

History

Ancient mountain pass. The village of Mulegns owes its existence to traffic over the pass. The narrow valley near Mulegns has been used for over four thousand years. The small village has seen traders and warriors, refugees and military leaders, emperors and beggars, muleteers and pilgrims, tourists and emigrants. Mulegns knows a lot about travelling, about wanderlust, about quiet longing, about human restlessness.

A reflection of travel culture. The buildings in this small village reflect the rich cultural history of travel. The Post Hotel Löwe tells the story of the beginnings of tourism in Graubünden, the pioneering spirit of the first hoteliers, the demands of a distinguished clientele at the end of the Belle Époque, and the daring postilions and illustrious guests. American presidents and Russian tsar widows meet in the corridors of the sprawling complex. Scientists and Nobel Prize winners spend the night in the wallpaper-lined rooms. Artists and entrepreneurs sign the guest books, lending the Hotel Löwe glamour before the outbreak of the First World War.

Cradle of tourism. The spacious hotel complex with its own smithy, large farm and private power station tells a story of courageous entrepreneurship, visionary ideas and the drive for independence. The Balzer family invested in the development of tourism in the valley. The construction of the Rhaetian Railway caused traffic on the Julier Pass to collapse and prevented the further expansion of the hotel.

Witnesses to emigration. The emigrant houses bear witness to the centuries-old history of emigration from Graubünden. The Jegher and Poltera families emigrated to Bordeaux and opened cafés and patisseries in the heart of the magnificent city. With the wealth they earned in France, they built stately villas for their retirement – not on the outskirts of Bordeaux, but in their home village of Mulegns.

Contemporary relevance. The world of travel connects history and current events. Mobility, tourism, migration and integration are among the major issues and challenges facing modern society.

Documentation and book edition. The paper records of the Post Hotel Löwe were carefully collected and professionally stored. Parallel to this documentary work, the history of the buildings and their inhabitants was researched. Historian Basil Vollenweider has published two volumes on the Post Hotel Löwe, which form the basis for all renovation work.

Rooms

The rooms of the well-travelled. The Mulegnser guest books are a source of inspiration. The design of the rooms is reminiscent of the origins of the guests and brings the big wide world into the house, just as it did when half of Europe used to stay here. There are three room categories: two double rooms (Paris, Helsinki), three double rooms extra (Turin, Moscow, London) and two suites (St. Petersburg, Florence).

Gastronomy
